Wood/Toews Addition
For this project the clients wanted to replace an old low porch with an expanded living room area on the south side of the house. One of the main concerns was getting the balance of solar gain right, so that the sun would help heat the house in the cooler months but not add heat when temps started to rise. In response the overhangs were sized using 3D modeling software that gave solar position and showed the appropiate shading for a given month. The exterior shade structure helps cool the deck area and also cut down on glare shining through the sliding window wall. On pleasant days and evenings the owners open all the doors at once to let the outside in.
